Heat Pump Water Heater Sales in 2022 Signal a Decisive Shift in Water Heating

Energy-efficient water heating took significant strides in 2022, according to the latest data released by ENERGY STAR. Sales of heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) grew 26% last year while sales of gas water heaters declined by 17%, underlining a clear shift in the U.S. toward more efficient, electric powered water heating systems. This is good news for the HPWH industry, which has seen significant growth in its first decade on the market, but still accounts for less than 2% of the water heater market. (October 12, 2023)

This Earth Day invest in a Heat Pump Water Heater and do the equivalent of planting a tree (or forest)

The energy efficiency, cost savings, and versatility of heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) make them a clear choice for the environment and households across the U.S. With 120 million water heaters in the U.S. alone, we could save over 100 million tons in carbon emissions every year if all the water heaters in U.S. buildings were transitioned to heat pump technology.

This Earth Day, join us in spreading the word about HPWHs and their many benefits. In this blog find multiple reasons why. (April 2023)

AWHI News: January webinar, IRA resources, supporting members, meetings, call for photos, and more

An Electrify Now webinar addressed the question, how environmentally friendly are tankless gas water heaters? Because these water heaters work on-demand, they offer energy savings over conventional gas tank water heaters. However, the vast majority of tankless water heaters still run on fossil fuels (natural gas) and new research shows that they emit a puff of methane every time they turn on. This methane leakage works against their efficiency benefits and contributes to climate warming.

    News:

A heat pump water heater is the energy saving equivalent of 7 solar panels & costs ⅙ the price

Published by CleanTechnica: Water heating accounts for 25% of a home’s energy use, and thus offers an opportunity for big reductions in both pollution and cost. Heat pump water heaters move heat instead of creating it and are much more efficient than 20th century gas and electric resistant water heaters.

Learn more in this article by Joseph Wachunas. He’s installed 3 heat pump water heaters, sung their praises for the last few years, and recently started working on the Advanced Water Heating Initiative which seeks to make every new water heater use heat pump technology by 2030. (April 2022)

The promise of hydronic systems in building decarbonization

Published by Mechanical Business Magazine: As North America adds more renewable energy to the grid and more communities commit to building decarbonization as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are fueling climate change, demand for energy-efficient radiant designs, which use water to heat or cool interior spaces, and heat pump technology for domestic hot water heating is expected to grow.

Besides using less energy, radiant heating systems and heat pump water heaters can help grid managers by storing thermal energy (hot water) for later use. (March 2022)

At Bayview Tower, Ecotope and Bonneville Power Administration Mark A Step Forward in Decarbonizing Buildings

For tenants of large apartment buildings, the prospect of a new water heating system installation can be cause for alarm. Prolonged utility shutoffs present a real burden for residents, at times even forcing them to relocate during the work period. But at Bayview Tower, a 100 unit affordable senior apartment building operated by the Seattle Housing Authority in Belltown, the upgrade from an old electric boiler to a new ultra-efficient commercial heat pump water heating system was achieved in a single afternoon, with minimal disruption for residents. Scaling up market transformation for heat pump water heaters

While the average person might not think about it when turning on the faucet, changing the way you heat water in your home or business could drastically reduce your carbon footprint. Water heating accounts for a large share of the energy use of buildings—up to 17% in single-family and 32% in multifamily homes. With buildings currently representing 39% of U.S. carbon emissions, momentum is growing for energy-efficient technologies such as heat pump water heaters (HPWHs), which are two to four times more efficient than most conventional approaches to water heating.
